Tips for the Holiday Season

Food and Drinks

The holiday season is a time for family, friends and food. With all the temptations of food, sweets, and alcohol here are some tips on how to keep your teeth healthy over the holiday period.

  • Make sure to keep up with your routine of brushing twice daily and flossing.

  • Drink water between meals or after sweet foods and drinks.

  • If drinking wine or other alcohol, sip on or swish with water after. Acidic drinks can cause dental erosion if consumed frequently or over long periods – give your teeth a few hours rest between drinks.

Avoid biting or chewing hard on things like candy canes, peanut brittle, or sticky toffees etc. especially if you have recently had a fillings or crowns placed.

Dental Pain or Emergency

Unfortunately, dental pain and problems can occur at inconvenient and unexpected times, and the holiday season is no exception.

Contact your regular dental clinic or dentist – in some cases clinics may still be operating during the holiday season for emergency appointments. If you are unable to get an appointment because dental clinics are closed, there are dental hospitals you can contact for help or emergency appointments.

Travelling

Handy tips for a fresh and clean feel during your travels!

  • Dental packs (brush, small toothpaste and floss) are great for flights overseas or when you have stopovers at the airport.

  • Mouthwash can help keep your breath fresh if you don’t get chance to brush on flights or stopovers.

  • If you have an electric brush, don’t forget to pack the charger. If it’s easier take a soft manual brush during your travel period.
