If you’re missing one or more teeth, you may have heard of a dental bridge as a treatment option. But what exactly is a bridge, and is it right for you?

Understanding Dental Bridges

A dental bridge is a fixed prosthetic device used to replace one or more missing teeth. It literally “bridges” the gap created by a missing tooth using the surrounding teeth for support.

Types of Dental Bridges

  1. Traditional Bridge – The most common type, it uses crowns on either side of the gap to support a replacement tooth (pontic).

  2. Cantilever Bridge – Used when there’s only one supporting tooth next to the gap.

  3. Maryland Bridge – A resin-bonded bridge that uses metal or porcelain wings bonded to the backs of adjacent teeth.

  4. Implant-Supported Bridge – Supported by dental implants rather than natural teeth.

Why Consider a Bridge?

  • Restores your smile

  • Improves chewing and speech

  • Maintains facial structure

  • Prevents adjacent teeth from shifting

What Is the Procedure Like?

At Gentle Care Dentistry, we begin with a comprehensive consultation. If a traditional bridge is suitable, the adjacent teeth are prepared and impressions taken. A temporary bridge is placed while a custom one is crafted. Once ready, the permanent bridge is fitted and adjusted for comfort.

Caring for Your Bridge

  • Brush and floss daily, especially around the bridge

  • Use floss threaders or interdental brushes

  • Attend regular check-ups for cleanings and inspections
