If you’re missing one or more teeth, you may have heard of a dental bridge as a treatment option. But what exactly is a bridge, and is it right for you?
Understanding Dental Bridges
A dental bridge is a fixed prosthetic device used to replace one or more missing teeth. It literally “bridges” the gap created by a missing tooth using the surrounding teeth for support.
Types of Dental Bridges
Traditional Bridge – The most common type, it uses crowns on either side of the gap to support a replacement tooth (pontic).
Cantilever Bridge – Used when there’s only one supporting tooth next to the gap.
Maryland Bridge – A resin-bonded bridge that uses metal or porcelain wings bonded to the backs of adjacent teeth.
Implant-Supported Bridge – Supported by dental implants rather than natural teeth.
Why Consider a Bridge?
Restores your smile
Improves chewing and speech
Maintains facial structure
Prevents adjacent teeth from shifting
What Is the Procedure Like?
At Gentle Care Dentistry, we begin with a comprehensive consultation. If a traditional bridge is suitable, the adjacent teeth are prepared and impressions taken. A temporary bridge is placed while a custom one is crafted. Once ready, the permanent bridge is fitted and adjusted for comfort.
Caring for Your Bridge
Brush and floss daily, especially around the bridge
Use floss threaders or interdental brushes
Attend regular check-ups for cleanings and inspections
