Tips for a Good Night Sleep

At Gentle Care Dentistry, we believe that looking after your overall health is just as important in ensuring you look after your oral health.

 

Why is sleep important for your health?
There are many benefits of getting a good nights rest, including:
  1. Improved memory.

  2. Longer life expectancy with too much and too little sleep associated with a shorter lifespan.

  3. Reduce inflammation – people who get 6 hours or less of sleep a night have higher blood levels of inflammatory proteins.

  4. Improved grades at school due to improvements with attention and learning.

  5. Lower stress levels and in turn better control of blood pressure. 

 

Sleep is also important for your oral health!

  1. Sleep allows your immune system to restore which reduces your chance of periodontal disease.

  2. Sleeping improves your emotional health which in turn, reduces your chance of jaw clenching.

 

Tips to getting a better night’s sleep
  • Try to get your body into a schedule and go to sleep and wake up at the same time everyday. Make sure you allocate enough time each night for sleep.

  • Perform vigorous exercise during the day.

  • Limit caffeine, nicotine, alcohol and large meals at night before bed.

  • Take time to relax before you go to sleep including reading a book. Try to avoid technology at least 1 hour before bed time - if you can't, then use a blue light filter on your screens to decrease eye strain.

  • Create a comfortable sleep environment through ideal temperatures, and comfortable bed and pillows. We spend one third of our lives in bed so it is important you find it comfortable and relaxing.
