Dry mouth is a decrease in the amount of saliva in your mouth.
Causes of Dry Mouth
Some of the causes of dry mouth may include:
Some medications have dry mouth as a side effect including antihistamines, decongestants, and pain killers.
Dehydration caused from not drinking enough water, or from inadequate re-hydrating after exercise.
Diseases including autoimmune disorders, Parkinson’s disease and depression.
The Effects of Dry Mouth
The main side effect of dry mouth in relation to your oral health is tooth decay. Saliva is important as it starts the process of digestion, helps to wash bacteria and food particles off your teeth that have been left behind, and additionally neutralises the harmful acids in the mouth. Other side effects of dry mouth include bad breath and increase risk in gum disease.
Tips to Relieve Dry Mouth

Chewing sugar free gum will help stimulate the saliva production. It is important to ensure your gum is sugar free and contains xylitol.
Drinking plenty of water will help ensure you stay hydrated and help increase saliva production.
Talk to your doctor if you have any concerns regarding your dry mouth. There may be some alternate medications that could be used.
Important to brush your teeth twice a day, and daily flossing to help maintain good oral health.
